Tips for the Perfect Beach Day

With Huntington Beach just 10 minutes away from DeLillo Chevrolet, we love stopping off for a lunch break or an afternoon in the sun. When you’re planning your family’s days at the beach this summer, use these simple tips to have the perfect beach day every time.

Protect your gear

Even if your phone is in a waterproof case, store it in a ziplock back when you’re at the beach. This ensures that it’s protected from both water and sand, and the touch screen is still accessible through the baggie.

Meanwhile, it’s easier to protect all of your belongings from the sand when you use an upside down fitted sheet as your beach towel. Just put one item, such as a cooler, at each corner and pull up the edges of the sheet around the items to build a little sheet wall around the perimeter.

Hide your valuables

Hide your money, jewelry, and keys out of plain sight by cleaning out an old sunscreen bottle. This makeshift, low-budget safe will blend in with its surroundings, keeping your valuables out of the limelight.

Clean up

Some people like having sand in their vehicle as a happy reminder of fun in the sun. If you’re not one of these people, keep a soft bristled brush in your vehicle to help clean sand off of passengers before entering. Baby powder is also a handy tool in cleaning wet sand off of sun-kissed feet.

Three Great Ways to Celebrate Earth Day

Garden

At DeLillo Chevrolet, we love anything that inspires a greener lifestyle. Earth Day is a great reminder that it’s up to us to protect our planet. Here are three ways how you and your family can make a difference and celebrate Earth Day this year.

Start a garden

Earth Day shouldn’t just be a one-day thing; it should be an inspiration to make changes and tweaks for a more sustainable lifestyle moving forward. Gardening is a great way to create a positive relationship with the Earth, and to get away from processed foods and major factory farms. Start small by planting a couple of herbs, then let your garden grow from there.

Make your car greener

This day is a great opportunity to ride your bike to work or walk to the grocery store. But for your usual daily commute, look into ways to make your vehicles more efficient. Start by cleaning out any excess junk in your car. The extra weight requires more gas to move it. Then, learn about the different ways in which you can develop green driving habits, like using less aggressive acceleration and avoiding idling.

Get outside

There’s no better way to rekindle your relationship with planet than by spending some quality time together. Plan a picnic with your family or a long hike at a local state park. There are so many ways to enjoy the planet, from planting a tree to bird watching. Find a new way to get the most out of nature with your family this Earth Day.

Palm Springs

Spring is the perfect time to visit Palm Springs, a desert city just two hours east of Los Angeles in the Coachella Valley. It’s warm enough to take a dip in the pool at your mid-century modern hotel, but cool enough to be comfortable enjoying a game of golf or a visit to Joshua Tree National Park. This resort town has so much art, nature, and experiences unique to it, it’s a must-visit on any spring break bucket list.

A Road Trip Checklist for Your Next Adventure

The sun is out, the weather’s nice, and summer break is coming up fast. It seems like the right time of year to start planning your family’s next big outing on the open road; nothing quite says “summer” like a long road trip. However, you might feel like you’re at a loss when it comes to packing. How do you make sure everyone has everything they need? Just take a look at this road trip checklist, and you’ll cover all the basics.

Emergency Supplies: Everyone needs a First-Aid kit around regularly anyway, but on vacation, you should definitely have one within reach. From basics like bandages and over-the-counter cold medicine to more specific necessities like individual prescription medications to vacation staples such as sunscreen, it’s important to make sure you have all the bases covered just in case. Also, this applies to car emergencies as well — spare tires, jumper cables, and car jacks are all good to have around.

Navigation Aids: Have you ever been in a situation where your GPS lost its signal or gave you the totally wrong directions? While having a GPS on hand is important and makes the trip a lot easier and faster, having a map and printed directions around can also help streamline any bumps in the road.

Music and Entertainment: Whether you just have a few mix CDs on-hand, a book or eReader, or you bring all the kids’ handheld gaming devices, it’s good to have something around to keep people in the car occupied on the open road.

Clothing and Toiletries: The first thing most people think of when they plan on packing for vacation is clothes and toiletries. Make sure you pack comfortable clothing for when you’ll be sitting in the car for long periods of time. Also, things like toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, and the like are obviously a requirement for being comfortable and healthy. It’s also a good idea to bring spare blankets and pillows!

Food: Often overlooked, food is crucial to a road trip. It’s important to pack snacks and wholesome meals so people have something to eat on the road, instead of having to waste time and money stopping for greasy fast food.

Hopefully this road trip checklist has helped you remember something you may have overlooked. Above all, what matters most is that you spend time bonding with your loved ones and enjoying your time off.

Valentine’s Day Activities for the Whole Family

Happy Valentine's Day Huntington Beach CA

These activities help you celebrate Valentine’s Day in a family-friendly way.

Valentine’s Day is about a lot of things. Some people think it’s just a Hallmark holiday invented to sell things. Some people think it’s about celebrating romantic love with flowers, chocolate, and dates at nice restaurants. For some families, however, it’s just not a viable option to pass the kids onto a babysitter and go out for the evening — or, you may want to share the gift of love with your kids as well. But in a world drenched in romance, what are some Valentine’s Day activities that are fun for everyone, kids included?

Parents can take the opportunity to use Valentine’s Day as a way to teach children about love. Love in this sense doesn’t necessarily mean romantic love — friends and family are just as vital to our lives. Taking the time to make gifts and compliment each other can really help kids understand the value of interpersonal relationships. For example, you might have the family write letters of appreciation or thanking each other for specific good deeds. You could even make each other candies or other sweets instead of just buying Valentine’s candy from the store.

If you don’t just want it to be a family event, you can have a Valentine’s party for your kids as well and let them invite friends over. At these parties, parents can have the kids make Valentines for each other and provide red, pink, and white snacks (or have the kids help make them!).

Valentine’s Day activities don’t just have to be about you and your significant other. They can include the whole family! Scouring through the web turns up a bunch of ideas for Valentine’s Day inspired games, crafts, and activities, and I’m sure you can even come up with a few of your own if you’re feeling creative.
