While your average enthusiast will tell you that a car needs good ol’ gasoline to be high-performing, the all-electric Chevy Bolt EV has a surprise in store for those fossil fuel fanboys.
The all-electric Chevy Bolt EV went head-to-head against the Volkswagen Golf GTI in a series of three races, delivering a true whooping to the VW in two out of three bouts. One race ended with a win for the Golf GTI by the skin of its teeth, but only because of a faulty start by the Bolt.
The Volkswagen Golf GTI is well-known for being a sprightly little hatchback with a lot more “oomph” than meets the eye, but that golden-child reputation didn’t help it much in this battle with the Bolt. The Chevy Bolt EV is as striking as its name implies, with impressive features such as 238 miles on a single charge and the Electronic Precision Shift gear system.*

The North American International Auto Show is held every year in Detroit and could easily be classified as the largest auto show in the United States. Each year, automakers all over the world flock to Detroit to show off their new wares in January, and NAIAS recognizes individual nameplates with awards like Car and Truck of the Year. This year, the Chevrolet Bolt EV took home the award for Detroit’s Car of the Year.
The Chevy Bolt has already won a few other honors, including Motor Trend’s Car of the Year back in November and the Green Car of the Year award given to the vehicle at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The Bolt seems to be collecting a heavy collection of awards, though it’s not unwarranted; with a sticker price below $30,000 and an electric range of around 238 miles on a single charge, the Chevy Bolt costs about half the price as the competition, including the Tesla Model S.
Kicking off 2017 with the Car of the Year award from the Detroit Auto Show isn’t anything to turn up your nose at, either. The Chevy Bolt has already started the New Year with a big win, an omen of its success as a highly-anticipated and much-needed member of the electric car segment.
Though the Chevrolet Bolt has long been teased and previewed by the brand, the Bolt production model finally made its debut at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show in January. The 2017 Bolt had also been revealed at the Consumer Electronics Show, but Detroit makes the car’s first event specifically catered to cars and the auto industry. Chevrolet took the opportunity to release some previously unknown information regarding the new Chevy Bolt and its features and performance.
The company revealed that the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV has a lithium-ion battery pack with 60 kilowatt-hours, while the electric motor in charge of spinning the Bolt’s front wheels has an output of about 150 kilowatts, or, in more familiar terms, 200 horsepower. The Bolt will be able to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 7 seconds, thanks to the traction motor’s 266 lb-ft of torque. Chevy says the charger is capable of replenishing 50 miles in two hours, with a full recharge taking about 9 hours at the most.
If buyers of the Bolt production model have the convenience of access to nearby CCS charging stations, they can also opt to use the built-in CCS charging port, which Chevrolet representatives have stated will charge the 2017 Bolt up to 90 miles in just 30 minutes. This may change as CCS stations become more commonplace and advanced, as current stations have an output of 50 kW or less.
If the Chevy Bolt resembles the Volt in name, so does it too in appearance. Styling elements borrow heavily from the Volt, and perhaps even from the i3, at least insofar as dimensions are concerned.
When it launches, the Bolt hatchback is expected to have a 200-mile electric range, though in sheer size it seems larger than a traditional hatchback. In other words, it’ll allow families who want to go green the opportunity to drive something even more efficient than the Volt without being cramped for room.
