How StabiliTrak Works

2015 Chevy Malibu StabiliTrak

Chevy Malibus with StabiliTrak are better able to maintain control and avoid accidents.

You’ve heard of StabiliTrak and know that it helps keep you on the road, but you do you know how? StabiliTrak is an important General Motors safety feature you don’t want to miss out on.

Electronic stability control systems help control your car when you start to skid. If your car starts to fishtail on a slippery road, StabiliTrak applies the outside front brake of the opposite side from the direction you’re travelling in. Putting the brake only in this position returns your car to its course. Or, if your car fails to turn on a slippery road, it applies the inside rear brake opposite from the direction your car is travelling to return you to your desired path.

How does it know to do this? Sensors in the system work to detect the difference between the direction that the driver is actually turning and how the vehicle reacts by “reading” the steering wheel position, vehicle speed, the amount of sideways force, and how the vehicle is turning.

By isolating certain brakes, StabiliTrak puts you back in control. It can save a lot of lives out there, so consider a vehicle with StabiliTrak when you’re looking for your next car!
